Roxanne Potvin – “I Know It’s Good” (Comino Records): This Juno-nominated and musically eclectic roots singer/songwriter impressed with her self-produced 2016 album For Dreaming, and she will release a five-song EP, All It Was, on Sept. 21.
It is preceded by this track, one that showcases her affinity with Memphis-style soul. The song has a steamy and sensual feel, ideally suited to these hot and languid summer nights. Potvin’s vocals are subtly expressive, and the production gradually builds in intensity, with female backing vocals and strong keyboards and guitar work contributing to a rich but not overdone sound. Her band includes A-listers Christine Bougie, Jesse O’Brien, Mark McIntyre, and Olivier Fairfield.
The new EP will be accompanied by videos for all five songs, and this classy clip, directed by Petr Maur, has a retro style, with a hint of David Lynch in there.
Potvin has released five full-length albums, beginning with 2003’s Careless Loving. Her 2006 album The Way It Feels was produced by Colin Linden, and it gained a Juno nomination for Blues Album of the Year.
She plays London Music Club in London on Sept. 14, then CD release shows at the Elgin in Ottawa (Sept. 21) and The Painted Lady in Toronto (Sept. 22).
